Using Bias Tape Makers

Click here for printable step-by-step instructions (pdf)

We use a 1" and 2" bias tape maker to make banding for many of our valances such as the Claudine Valance.  When using the 1" bias tape make, you must first cut bias strips that are 2-1/4" wide. For the 2" bias tape maker, cut bias strips that are 3-3/4" wide.  Seam together as many strips as necessary to get the length that you need. For tips on cutting bias strips, click here.  Next, insert the end of the bias strips through the bias tape maker as shown.

Pull the bias strip though the bias tape maker until you have enough to start ironing.

Iron the bias strip as you pull it through the bias tape maker.

Next, iron a strip of 1/2" Steam-A-Seam2 onto each side of the pressed edge.

Peel the backing off the Steam-A-Seam2 and press the banding to the edge of the valance as shown.  In the Claudine Valance, we have already sewn piping into the edge of the valance.  Since the banding is cut on the bias, it should curve nicely along the bottom of the valance.

To finish off the end, trim banding about 1" from the end of the valance as shown.

Open up the bias strip and fold 1" of the banding as shown.

Re-fold the banding back in place.

Press in place.

You now have nice, smooth banding applied to your valance in a snap!!
