Q:
Can this pattern be adapted to a canted bay window (not a bow window)?
Asked by:
Pat B.
- 2/27/2014
A:
This valance works perfectly in a canted or bay window but a little creativity has to be used to mount the hardware sometimes. When figuring for a single valance to be installed across the entire space rather than individual windows just remember to allow for a horn to fall into the break or bend where the wall angles into the next window wall. Depending on which hardware used- a rod or knob application. You will need to put a ring there if you use a rod. If you are using knobs and posts then the post will need to be placed in the bend or as close to the bend as possible. Sometimes we have to cut a small flat piece of wood and fit it into the bend to create a flat surface for the hardware to be installed on. We can go into further detail if you give us a call. 205.424.1770 ext 2.

To make the cuffs, do you have to cut the edge to a half moon shape or does the fabric stay straight?

To make the Cuff Top Valance you wound need to follow the instructions included with the pattern packet and carefully cut the shape exactly as the full size pattern also included.

Q:
I would like to make a cafe curtain and not a valance with the cuff top. I do not want the ends to hang lower and I would like the cuff bottom to be straight. Would it be possible you think, for me to adapt your pattern to do what I'm wanting? I have tried to do this on my own however just can not get the droopy effect. Thank you!
Asked by:
Kim
- 3/20/2014
A:
Kim, to make a cafe curtain it would be best to use our Cuff-top PANELS Pattern (http://www.patemeadows.com/cufftop_panels.htm#.Uys2bvldXTA). You would just cut the length shorter than normal for the cafe curtain.

Q:
Will this pattern work with your SUI-VIL fabric railroaded, or will the design look wrong? Many thanks for your assistance.
Asked by:
Karen
- 4/18/2014
A:
I believe the SUI-VIL can be railroaded to be used on the Cuff Top Pattern. It is a all over print so I don't believe it will look wrong at all.

Is it reversible, or is it possible to make this reversible?
Asked by:
Michele
- 7/13/2014
A:
The Cuff Top valance could absolutely be made to be reversible.

Q:
If I want to mount the valance using ties, should the ties be sewn onto the valance with the tie vertical and the seam horizontal, or with the tie horizontal and the seam vertical?
Asked by:
donna
- 9/28/2014
A:
It depends on the hardware you are using. If you are running the tie through a ring or around a post then you would want to sew it horizontally. If you are wrapping the ties around a rod then you will want to sew it vertically.

Q:
I am making the Cuff Top Valance for an 89" window using an "outdoor" fabric w/ a medium weight contrast lining. Is it necessary to use an interlining? Also, can the valance be made longer than the pattern?
Asked by:
Deborah serbule
- 7/14/2016
A:
We get this question on a weekly basis. Do I REALLY need to interline? My answer is always "only if you want it to look like it was professionally made". I'm of the opinion that if you take the time to custom make a treatment, why wouldn't you? Interlining sets your project apart from store bought , ready-made treatments. View the video on our website explaining interlining and how it makes such a difference. This video is talking about panels but it will give you a good idea of how important we think it is.
http://www.patemeadows.com/HowToCustomizeReadyMadePanelsWithTintedLaceTrim
To lengthen your valance you will need to split the pattern piece all the way across the middle and spread the pieces apart the amount you want to lengthen the valance. This insures the integrity of the valance is not compromised. As always, any time you are altering a pattern - MAKE A MOCK out of lining first. Then use the mock as your new pattern.

Q:
I just sumitted a question a second ago and had an after thought. Can you create a tab positioned over each horn on this pattern so to hang on an exposed pole rod?
Asked by:
Dooo
- 12/15/2017
A:
A tab will work with the Cuff Top Valance. Originally we wrote the pattern for ties as well as clip on rings. Follow the instructions for that except alter the length of the tie so that it becomes a tab instead.

Q:
Could this pattern be used to make the valance without the cuff on the top?
Asked by:
Nancy
- 8/8/2019
A:
It could indeed !!!!! Simply cut across the fold line when you are cutting the fabrics out. Other options would be to very slightly scoop out the area where the cuff is now for a scalloped look or leave a very slight hump in the cuff area. Experiment with the look you prefer by cutting out a couple different versions and push pin them on the wall over your window. But keep in mind the pattern is meant to have depth so push pinning won't give you the exact same look as if you were installing it properly on a rod or post and knobs but it will give you a general idea of what your valance will look like after you make these alterations. Thanks for your questions ! Experiment away and have fun !!!!

Q:
If using the cuff valance on a window that is at the maximum width under the yardage requirements, will that still give a full look? I don't want the bells to look too stretched out. There is a photo in the gallery that looks almost flat. I do not want this to be the case. My finished treatment should be 75 inches which is at the maximum width for 2 1/4 yards. Again, just want to make sure this will be full even though not as full as if it were being hung at 65 inches. Don't want to look skimpy. Thank you!
Asked by:
Len
- 1/27/2020
A:
We totally get it !!! When we designed the valances we joked around a lot - our unspoken motto was "we don't like no skemp" !!!
We like a ratio of 12 to 14" of fabric per 7 to 8.5" of wall space. Some of the skimpy-ness comes from not dressing the valance properly. We have a video on our YouTube channel. This will insure that your valance will look exactly like ours. You can view it here.
